The casket spray is a most traditional tribute, used with either an open, or a closed casket during the visitation or funeral service. In fact the two major types of casket sprays, known as the half-couch and full couch, derive their names from the old-fashioned word for casket, which was “couch.” There is a third category, the small full-couch, which is a size suitable for smaller adult caskets. A half-couch spray would drape the lower half of the casket during the visitation if the casket is open, while a full-couch or small full-couch spray would be placed on the casket lid, in a closed casket situation.
A casket spray is most commonly a floral tribute given by a member of the immediate family; the spouse, children, or siblings of the deceased.
The casket spray, which has also been known as coffin flowers or casket flowers, is both a tribute flower arrangement, and can a personal reflection of the deceased. Select one in their favorite colors, such as a blue casket spray; or their favorite flowers. Perhaps a sunflower casket spray, or rose casket spray would be appropriate; or perhaps a seasonal theme, such as a spring or fall casket spray. There are also unique casket sprays which focus on the hobbies or passions of the deceased, such as a golf casket spray, fisherman casket spray, or the very popular gardening casket spray. A military casket spray honors the military service of the deceased, and is personalized as to the branch of the military in which they served.
An infant casket spray needs to express the purity and innocence of their lives. The colors and textures of a baby’s casket spray or a child’s casket spray can beautifully complement those of the casket itself, which is often white, pink or blue.
A casket spray can be mono-botanical, where all one type of flower is used throughout the design. This could be as simple as all roses, or something different like all sunflowers, or mono-chromatic, meaning one color is used throughout the design, which could be an angelic all-white color, or a primary color like yellow. Both designs offer more impact for the money.
There is also a garden style floral design, with a more open presentation, and different types of garden filler flower and greenery. There is also a tropical style, with the addition of tropical type of flowers and unique greenery. Finally, there’s contemporary design, where we group “like” flowers together.
